African-American lecturer, singer and fundraiser Louise De Mortie dedicated herself to helping African-American children orphaned during the U.S. Civil War. Born in Virginia, she moved to Boston in 1853, then New Orleans in 1863, where she raised money to support the Colored Orphans Home, which she managed. She died young, in her 30s, of yellow fever in 1867.
