The following is excerpted from Infinite Women creator Allison Tyra’s book Uncredited: Women’s Overlooked, Misattributed, and Stolen Work.
In 1970, 60 women employees of Newsweek sued the magazine. Female researchers accused male writers and editors of taking credit for their work, including Lynn Povich, who later wrote a book about the experience, Good Girls Revolt. The women, represented by Eleanor Holmes Norton, filed a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, asserting that Newsweek only allowed men to be reporters. The women won, forcing Newsweek to allow women to officially be recognised as reporters—work that they were already apparently doing. Ironically, the day the claim was filed, that week’s cover article was about the feminist movement, called “Women in Revolt.” The woman who wrote it was a freelancer because there were no female reporters on staff.
