NOE, CANEDI MADDALENA, Is a native of Bologna. Early in life she had the opportunity at her native city of acquiring a knowledge of literature and science, for which she manifested decided abilities. She was admitted to that celebrated university, and then, after going through the regular studies, attended a course of law lectures. In this science she became so thoroughly versed, that the faculty determined to bestow a degree upon her. This was done on the 26th. of April, 1807. The college of lawyers, in endowing her with the doctoral ring, presented her with a black velvet gown, embroidered in gold with laurel leaves, and in the centre, woven in gold letters, these words, “Collegium Doctorum Jusis Archigymnasii Bonon, dat merenti.” Shortly after this she married, and has since lived in the most retired domestic privacy. Nor has the remembrance of her laurels or literary triumphs diminished in the least the mildness and modesty which are an essential part of her character.
The following is excerpted from the Prospetto biografico delle donne italiane rinomate in letteratura dal secolo decimoquarto fino a’ giorni nostri di Ginevra Canonici Fachini (Biographical Survey of Italian Women Renowned in Literature from the Fourteenth Century to the Present Day by Ginevra Canonici Fachini), published in 1824 and made available by Project Gutenberg.
Noè-Canedi, Maddalena, from Medicina, a town in the province of Bologna.
Transported to Bologna, I cannot say under what circumstances, she had the opportunity to study literature and science, for which she displayed an uncommon aptitude. She was admitted to that distinguished university, and there, after a regular course of study, she attended lectures on civil law; and the importance of this subject she understood so deeply that she received a doctorate in that faculty, a function she performed on April 26, 1807. The College of Lawyers, in awarding her the doctoral ring, also presented her with a black velvet sash embroidered with large gold laurel leaves, with the motto: Collegium Doctorum Juris Archigymnasii Bonon. dat merenti, also woven in gold, in the center. Having passed into marriage, she lives a very retired life, and the honorable memory of her literary laurels has not been able to diminish those feelings of moderation and modesty which form the finest quality of her golden character.
