Magda Szabó is Hungary’s most translated author, with works in more than 30 languages across 42 countries. Best known as a novelist, she also wrote theater plays, essays, memoirs, poetry and children’s books, and was a founding member of the Digital Literary Academy database of Hungarian literature. Her 1970 young adult novel Abigél ranked sixth overall in a 2005 poll of the most popular novels in the country, and third for books by Hungarian authors.
