Mama Adame was a ruler, known as a mansa, of the village of Bakindiki in Niumi Bato in the Kingdom of Niumi, in what is now The Gambia. Oral tradition names her as the first female mansa of the village, though other villages had women mansas. Visitors from the Sonko people offered to help her people, the Jammeh, who were at the time fighting the Saloum. The Sonko and Jammeh formed an alliance, with the Manneh tribe, agreeing to rotate rulership. Mama Adame declared that no other women should rule after her, reportedly saying “Underwear is not strong, but trousers are.”
