Margaret Wade Deland, an American novelist, born at Allegheny, Pa. She was educated at the Cooper Union, New York, and in 1880 married L.F. Deland of Boston, where she has since lived.
In 1886 The Old Garden and Other Verses appeared, but she first attracted attention with John Ward, Preacher, a novel of real merit and wide appeal. The most popular of her stories are those in which Dr. Lavendar, with his keen yet kindly insight, is the centre, and in which appear a varied group of village characters faithfully and graphically portrayed.
Among her later works are: Old Chester Tales (1899), The Awakening of Helena Richie (1906), and The Iron Woman (1911).
