Margaret W. Moodey was one of the Smithsonian Institution’s first female staff members. By 1924, an annual report states that she “had the entire responsibility and care of the collection of cut gems.” Although she worked there for more than forty years, starting as a scientific aide in the geology department around 1900, and despite both the importance of her duties and her role as a rare woman in the organisation, her papers were not saved. Those of her male colleagues were, so we are left with only men’s records that mention her as documentation of more than four decades of work.
