Se graduó como licenciada en derecho por la Universidad Autónoma de Cataluña. Vivió su exilio en México desde 1939 hasta su muerte. Adoptó la nacionalidad mexicana al contraer matrimonio con el pintor José Reyes Meza. Se incorporó y participó activamente en el movimiento teatral mexicano en 1944, con el estreno de su comedia La primavera inútil puesta en escena por el grupo Proa.

El contenido de la obra dramática de María Luisa Algarra es principalmente de índole realista. La dimensión social de obras como Casandra y Los años de prueba lo ponen de manifiesto. En esta última plantea los problemas de una juventud en crisis con su sociedad.

She graduated with a degree in law from the Autonomous University of Catalonia. She lived in exile in Mexico from 1939 until her death. She adopted Mexican nationality when she married the painter José Reyes Meza. She joined and actively participated in the Mexican theatre movement in 1944, with the premiere of her comedy La primavera inútil staged by the Proa group.

The content of María Luisa Algarra’s dramatic work is mainly realistic. The social dimension of works such as Casandra and Los años de prueba make this clear. In the latter, she addresses the problems of a youth in crisis with their society.

IW note: Algarra was also the first female judge in Spain.
