It’s particularly impressive when a woman’s work is credited to a man who literally could not have done it. In 2019, Smithsonian Data Science Lab fellow Tiana Curry found that dozens of botanical samples collected by natural historian, botanist, and artist Mary Vaux Walcott were listed under Mary’s husband’s name in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History database. Walcott’s husband, palaeontologist and Smithsonian Secretary Charles D. Walcott, died before the samples were even collected. When the handwritten cards were scanned into the database, titles were automatically removed. When “Mrs.” was removed from “Mrs. C. D. Walcott,” a woman’s work magically became her husband’s.
