MI6’s domestic counterpart, MI5, was no better when it came to Milicent Bagot. An intelligence officer and expert on Soviet Russia, she was the first to warn her agency about the Communist ties of Kim Philby, an MI6 officer who worked as a Soviet KGB double agent for almost thirty years. Her warning went unheeded, and he continued to work for British intelligence for more than a decade. Similarly, her concerns about another Soviet agent, Ursula Kuczynski, living as a housewife in the English countryside, were largely ignored. This allowed Kuczynski to continue her work for years, including acting as handler for nuclear scientist Klaus Fuchs, who conveyed all details to the Soviets as he helped develop the atom bomb.
