American novelist and miscellaneous writer, born at Washington, Pa. She was married to L. Clarke Davis, a Philadelphia journalist, in 1863. She contributed many short stories and sketches to periodicals, wrote several novels, and was the first writer in this country to introduce the labor question into fiction. Her sons, Richard Harding Davis and Charles Belmont Davis, made their mark in contemporary literature while their mother was still an active writer.
