Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, an American poet and philanthropist, daughter of Nathanial Hawthorne. During her youth she lived in England and Portugal where her father was U.S. consul. In 1871 she married George Parson Lathrop, with whom, until his death in 0898, she was associated with literary labors.
She has been especially interested in the improvement of conditions for suffering and needy people, and in 1891 established Saint Rose’s Free Home for Cancer, and Rosary Hill Home, in New York, where she afterward became head of a Dominican community and directress of a charitable home, her title be Mother Mary Alphonsa.
Besides her many poems, stories, and sketches, she wrote, with her husband, Memories of Hawthorne (1897).
