The following was written by Nina Baker and is excerpted from the book From Alchemy to Transport Phenomena: A Global History of Women in Chemical Engineering.

The detailed history of Bulgarian women scientists and engineers produced by Katsunov et al in 2018 includes many chemical engineers, too numerous to detail here. Rumyana Stefanova Velichkova (b. 1934) is one of the earliest, having graduated from the Institute of Organic Elemental Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow (1958) and gained her PhD (1968) and DSc (1989). She was an academic at the University of Sofia in her field of the kinetics and the mechanisms of cationic polymerization of vinyl monomers.
