African-American teacher, suffrage leader and clubwoman Sadie L. Adams was one of the first women to serve on a Chicago election board, and a co-founder of the Douglas League of Women Voters. At the National Equal Rights League conference in 1916, she was a delegate from the Alpha Suffrage Club, Chicago’s first African-American suffrage organization. She was the club’s vice-president, working with president Ida B. Wells. From 1921 to 1934, she served as the president of the Chicago and Northern District Association of Colored Women’s Club, in addition to her involvement with many other charitable clubs and organizations. Along with suffrage, her various causes included recruiting women to war work during World War I, providing resources for underserved youth and fighting against barriers to suffrage for African-American women.
