Journalist Sarah Koenig’s podcast Serial focused on Adnan Syed, who was convicted in 2000 of the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. When Serial aired in 2014, he was halfway through a thirty-year sentence. The attention the podcast brought to the case led to DNA testing on Lee’s clothing, shoes, and rape kit, and Syed’s conviction was vacated in 2022. Prosecutorial misconduct was also implied, as the prosecutor moving to vacate the charges referenced Brady violations—the withholding of evidence that could undermine a prosecutor’s case—by the original prosecutors.
