From the younger generation of chemical engineers in Asia, Malaysian Yeo Bee Yin (b.1983) had a Petronas Scholarship to the Universiti Teknologi Petronas where she graduated with First Class Honors in Chemical Engineering (2006). She then worked for Schlumbergers followed by an MPhil in Advanced Chemical Engineering at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. She entered politics with the Democratic Action Party, gaining elected office at the state (2013) and national (2014) levels, serving as the Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change, under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad from July 2018 to February 2020. In that role she was involved in pressing for more renewable energy development and also for the responsible management of plastic wastes.
