The following was written by Nina Baker and is excerpted from the book From Alchemy to Transport Phenomena: A Global History of Women in Chemical Engineering.
Chemical engineer Meghan Ireland is Chief Blender at the WhistlePig distillery in New England, managing the whiskey from barrel to bottle. Her degree is from Clarkson University and soon after college, she worked in craft hard (alcoholic) cider, before moving to WhistlePig in 2018. These examples are by no means a rarity: four other chemical engineers are also succeeding in the bourbon whiskey distilling profession: Andrea Wilson, Marianne Eaves, Joyce Nethery, Katherine O’Nan, all graduates of the University of Louisiana’s J.B. Speed School of Engineering.
