The following was written by Nina Baker and is excerpted from the book From Alchemy to Transport Phenomena: A Global History of Women in Chemical Engineering.

Brewing and distilling are arguably the ‘origin stories’ of chemical engineering and ones in which women used to be central makers until machinery took over and men dominated for generations. All that has changed now. All those unit operations, fluid flows etc., told chemical engineer Clara Robbins that distilling was likely to be her career. From her BSc in chemical engineering she initially worked part time in a craft brewery and part time in a medical laboratory, until she was approached by Castle & Key distillery in Kentucky to come work for Kentucky’s first female distiller, who was also an excellent example of how a good leader commands respect.
