English doctor Janet Mary Campbell was forced to resign from her civil service job in 1934 when she married, after having worked with departments ranging from the Board of Education (their first full-time woman medical officer), the War Cabinet during World War I and the Ministry of Health. Her thirty years of experience were suddenly outweighed by the ring on her finger, but she didn’t let that get her down—she went on to help refugee children fleeing the Spanish Civil War, chair the Public Health Committee of the International Council of Women, serve on the League of Nations’ Health Committee, and co-found the Medical Women’s Federation. Ironically, she was also a member of the War Cabinet’s Committee of Women in Industry during World War II.
