Bettisia Gozzadini was born in Bologna in 1209 to noble parents. She studied philosophy and law at the Studium of Bologna under Giacomo Baldavino and Tancred of Bologna, with encouragement from Odofredo.
In 1237, she graduated from the university and subsequently taught law at her home for two years. She was offered a teaching position at the Studium, which she initially declined but later accepted. A legend suggests she wore a veil while teaching to avoid distracting her students. However, this legend is also associated with Novella d’Andrea, and it’s uncertain which, if either, it indeed pertains to.
Bettisia Gozzadini was a skilled speaker and gave a funeral speech in 1242 for the Bishop of Bologna, Enrico della Fratta.
Tragically, on November 2, 1261, she and others lost their lives as her villa collapsed due to a flood from the Idice River. Her death caused mourning in the city, and schools were closed. Her funeral was held at the church of the Padri Serviti.
