Described as “the most influential female meditation teacher in Thailand,” Chandra Khonnokyoong was a maechi (nun). In 1970, she established the Wat Phra Dhammakaya Buddhist temple in Bangkok, which grew to be the largest in the country. Despite being illiterate and from a rural area (Nakhon Pathom), she was widely respected, with many students.
