Traditionally, the title of Ghigau, or “Beloved Woman” has been bestowed upon women who made special and unique contributions to the Cherokee people. Also known as “War Women,” Beloved Women have been selected for their honesty and wisdom. Historically, the title was attributed to women who protected the Cherokee as warriors. After serving, women would return home to continue their public service.
