Emmie Russell was an early practitioner in Australia of orthoptics, the study of eye movement and the treatment of vision disorders. After completing her training she joined the newly-established orthoptic clinic at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Sydney. During WWII she assisted the Royal Australian Air Force training program to increase the pilots’ effectiveness. Russell was active in the Orthoptic Association of Australia, being foundation President 1944 – 1947.
