American novelist Gloria Naylor was known for books about the African-American experience, including The Women of Brewster Place (1982), Linden Hills (1985), Mama Day (1988) and Bailey’s Cafe (1992). The Women of Brewster Place, her debut novel, won the 1983 National Book Award in the First Novel category and was adapted as a television miniseries in 1989by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, and starring Winfrey. As a professor, she taught writing and literature at institutions including George Washington University, New York University, Boston University, the University of Kent, the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University. She was also the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1985) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1988), among other awards.
