Lois Mailou Jones was an artist and educator whose work is held in prominent collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Muscarelle Museum of Art, and The Phillips Collection. She is closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance.
Lois Mailou Jones’s career spanned from the 1930s until her passing in 1998 at the age of 92. Her art evolved significantly due to her life experiences and travels. She explored various mediums and styles. Her extensive journeys across Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean influenced her work. She considered her greatest contribution to be showcasing the talent of Black artists and preferred to be known as an American painter without specific labels. Her work reflects her pride in her African heritage and American roots.
