The following is excerpted from Infinite Women creator Allison Tyra’s book Uncredited: Women’s Overlooked, Misattributed, and Stolen Work.

Italian pharmacist Sabina Baldoncelli completed all the coursework to earn a degree in the subject circa 1807. Although she had received the same education from tutors that male students had access to at university and had years of practical experience that most of them lacked, authorities allowed her to take her examinations only because of her special circumstances as an orphan residing in an orphanage. But they also stipulated that she could only practise her trade in the orphanage, not in secular pharmacies, restricting her from working anywhere else in Bologna.
