The following, “Zamazulu Thembekile Nkosi,” is republished from South African History Online in line with the SAHO Copyright, Disclaimer & Privacy policy.

Nkosi became the first Black matron in the Natal Provincial Administration and in KwaZulu-Natal. Her decision to nurse was motivated by a wish to help the sick. She worked hard to reach her goal, and was first appointed ‘senior nurse’ at the King Edward Hospital and then promoted to matron at KaMashu Poly-clinic.
